Are Fluoride Treatments Important for Kids?

Fluoride treatments are something we highly recommend for the children we care for at our Tampa dental office. Research has shown that fluoride plays a major role in helping developing teeth to become more resistant to cavities.

Often, parents believe that drinking fluoride-treated water or brushing with fluoride toothpaste is all a child needs to be protected. The fact is, many children are at a high risk for tooth decay. A simple fluoride treatment, twice a year with dental check-ups can go a long way to prevent future cavities and discomfort.

Topical fluoride treatments are essentially a varnish, which is painted directly onto the teeth. Treatments are simple and pain-free, but provide months worth of protection in cases of:

  • Infrequent or poor brushing
  • Excessive sugar intake
  • Predisposition to tooth decay

Fluoride treatments are not only highly effective in the prevention of tooth decay, they are considered safe for children by the American Dental Association. The ADA recommends the application of fluoride treatments for children, and has established guidelines for what amounts are safe and effective. Fluoride treatments for children are included as preventative care  in most dental plans. It is important to take advantage of this easy way to protect the dental health of your children.
