What is Botox?
Botox is a purified protein that is given as an injection in a simple, FDA approved non-surgical procedure that temporarily minimizes the appearance of moderate to severe wrinkles. Botox is a diluted paralytic agent that causes weakening of the muscle into which it is injected. When injected into wrinkle producing muscles, Botox makes these muscles weaken and relax, flattening out the wrinkles.

What is Juvéderm?
Juvéderm is an FDA approved gel-based filler that is administered by injection. Fillers treat wrinkles by raising them, or adding volume. Juvéderm filler is made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in your skin that absorbs water and adds volume. Injection of this volume enhancing gel under the skin instantly restores your skin’s volume and smooths out the appearance of facial wrinkles and folds. The benefit to doing this procedure in a dental office is the administration of local anesthesia intra-orally. This helps to eliminate the discomfort associated with the procedure.

Which is right for me?
Though Botox and Juvéderm are similar facial rejuvenation procedures, they treat wrinkles and help the anti-aging process in distinct ways. It is important to understand the difference between these procedures. Dr. Scott has guided many Tampa patients like you in choosing which treatment is appropriate.

The areas where Botox works best include the frown lines between the brows, forehead wrinkles, creases in the neck area, or crow’s feet near the eyes are. Following repeated treatments you will start to lessen the strength with which you frown and squint, which will actually prevent wrinkles from getting deeper. A typical Botox treatment lasts 3-4 months.

Juvéderm is effective in treating lines around the sides of the mouth, which form the shape of “parentheses” when you laugh or smile. It can also be effective in treating under-eye bags that give you a tired appearance. Juvéderm is also effective in restoring lip fullness. Because it works by absorbing your own body’s water, the effects increase over time. A single Juvéderm treatment can last up to one year.
