Dental Bridges or Dental Implants?

We see many patients in our Tampa dental office who need tooth replacement. While periodontal disease is the most common cause of tooth loss among adults, teeth may also be lost as a result of an illness or injury. In some cases, an adult tooth may not be present to emerge and take the place of a primary tooth.

For tooth replacement, there are typically two main options to choose from – dental bridges or dental implants.

How Dental Bridges Differ From Dental Implants

A dental bridge fills the space left by the missing tooth with a replacement that is kept in place by attaching to the adjacent teeth. Our patients who have opted for dental bridges have been very pleased with the results, finding them to be comfortable, functional, and aesthetically appealing.

The main drawback with dental bridges is that in order to ensure proper attachment of the bridge, the surrounding teeth must be prepared by some removal of enamel, which may compromise those teeth. The primary advantage offered by dental bridges is lower cost, making them a highly affordable option.

Since dental implants replace missing teeth by attaching directly to the jaw bone, they have no impact on healthy adjacent teeth. Placement of dental implants involves a minor surgical procedure for which the patient receives local anesthesia and oral or IV sedation. After a brief healing period, the bone and the implant fuse, and a crown restoration is placed on top to complete the dental implant.
