Children Are Likelier to See the Dentist if Their Parent Does

Tooth decay is no laughing matter. The long-term effects can negatively impact teeth, gums, and overall health. A National Health Interview Study was conducted to determine the best approach to tackling chronic tooth decay in children.

What do the numbers reveal?

6,107 children age 2 to 17 and their parents took part in the study. Of the participants, 64 percent of parents had seen a dentist during the previous year, and 77 percent of children had been to the dentist. Breaking the findings down further revealed that 86 percent of children whose parents visited the dentist also went for a visit. However, if the parents did not attend a dental exam themselves, only 63 percent of their children saw a dentist.

Simply put, parents who attend regular dental check-ups are more likely to ensure their child also receives dental care. Dr. Inyang Isong, M.D., the author of the study, says that the findings indicate oral health programs should “focus on the whole family.” To add to the data, the American Dental Association (ADA) has indicated that many people do not realize that dental health can have a serious impact on children’s overall health.
